The revolutions has begun nearly 11 years ago. When in 1998 a new preparation for erectile dysfunction became available on the pharmaceutical market under the brand name Viagra. The side effects and scandals go along with Viagra from the beginning. An article with frightening name “Some men taking Viagra die – why?” was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association(JAMA) in February 2000. It was compared a mortality among men taking different ED preparations. The results showed that men taking Viagra died 10-200 times more than men taking other ED preparations. However, it is reasonably to ask why these other preparations didn’t became revolutionary if they also were indicated for ED treatment. The problem was that all of these preparations had a range of limitations.

For example, Caverject which was available only in the form of injections which should be injected directly into the penis. Another preparation Muse was a modification of Caverject. Muse contains the same active ingredient as Caverject Alprostadil. Muse was available in the form of thin suppositories which were introduced into the urethra using a special applicator. Muse was invented after Viagra and this has determined its modest history. Some other herbal supplements are usually not effective or require a prolong application.

In two years after Viagra became available a new competitor n the pharmaceutical market occurred. A new medication contained apomorphine which was previously used in alcohol dependency. Beside its basic pharmaceutical effect Apomorhine significantly increased erection in men with erectile dysfunction.

This new preparations was known under the name Uprima. The clinical history of Uprima was short as well. In some years it was discontinued in most of the European countries and North America. Afterwards there were invented some new medications that became Viagra competitors. There were Livitra (vardenafil) and Cialis(tadalafil). These medicines work at the same way as viagra. They block an enzyme PDE5, increase the amount of cGMP and improve blood flow to the penis.

However, there are some difference between these 3 preparations Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. Cialis works within 36 hours, Levitra 6 hours and Viagra 4 hours. It is also considered that effect of Levitra occurs faster than Viagra effect. All of the medications are usually well tolerated and do not cause any significant side effects.
